Hi Piers, and weclome

It's always worth posting these suggestions up on the Forum, as Sony personnel do visit from time to time, and input here has been known to feed back into future product development.

In the mean time, the best suggestion I can offer is to use some means of support that will prevent this becoming an issue.

I carry an inexpensive, lighweight monopod that folds down to a pocketable size and provides a really good amount of stability. Something like that would hopefully help out while you wait

Good luck

Mick

Re: Sony Cybershot Stuck in Negative

Hi Faye, welcome to the Sony Forums

I'm guessing the photos turn out ok? It's probably a fault, in that case. There are some Picture Effects settings that look like a negative image but they would also record with the image file.

It's possible there's a setting you have inadvertently engaged, so try a reset: Power the camera down, remove the battery pack, wait for about one minute, re-insert the battery pack, then switch on. Then Initialise: http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4423999111/ENG/contents/06/03/06/06.html#l2_initialize

If the above doesn't fix it, you'll need to consider finding a technician that will. It could be a simple repair and it's worth asking, either at a decent camera shop (who may be able to arrange the repair) or via the Sony repair process: http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/repair to see how viable it would be.

Hope you find a solution

Mick

This usually happens by way of a pass key transmitted to the peripheral device from the host device (for example, your PC) which you read from the PC to and enter into the field provided on the camera screen.

This all assumes the camera has been 'discovered' by the host and prompted you with a key. Has this happened in your case?

Mick

Bad quality night photos

Hi

Night scenes can very difficult to record well, depending on conditions. Your examples show the most difficult of all: you have little or no 'ambient', natural light to fill the shadows, combined with extremely bright points of light.

The moon and the street lights are so much brighter than the surrounding darkness, the camera attempts to find an average exposure that accommodates both the large, very bright light sources and the very dark shadows, and often without 'knowing' what it is you want to see properly exposed.

If you want to see detail in the moon, you will lose all detail in the surrounding sky. It's simply too dark, compared to the surface of the moon, for any camera to record both at the same time. You have to force the camera to do this, as (set to automatic) it will attempt to average the exposure for the sky and the moon. Have a look at the procedure for using Manual exposure on the HX9V

If this is a little too technical and you'd prefer to let the camera make the best of it, don't rely on Intellgent Auto settings. Some scene settings will be worth experimenting with: details here

However the easiest and most effective Auto night-time shots settings must be with Superior Auto. The camera will take several shots in very quick succession and combine them to expand the exposure range between lightest and darkest areas in the frame. Find out how to set this up here

You need to hold the camera very still – in fact this is extremely important no matter which mode you shoot, as shutter speeds will be slow – and a tripod or strudy support is almost essential to avoid blurring the shot. Place the camera on a wall, or top of a car, for example, if a tripod is not an option.

One last thing: you'll get much better results when there is still a little light in the sky, just before dark or at first light, as it keeps this light>dark contrast down and gives some colour and detail to the shadows.

Experiment with these settings and techniques and I think you'll find your camera is actually pretty good at night scenes after all

Cheers

Mick

The best – and most widely-used – method of recording with off-camera mics is to use a separate digital recorder and sync that soundtrack with your video in post-production. A lot of people use Zoom recorders for their low price and quality audio. Using the camera's built-in mic as a guide, it's easy to synchronise with a video editor and very effective.

The 'trembling' effect you mention is likely due to a number of issues; maybe de-interlacing, shooting at too high a shutter speed, or not using a wide enough aperture. Obviously the last two can be a bit of a juggling act... there was a thread on this recently that might be worth checking out.

Cheers

Mick

Hi Ken, welcome to the Sony Forums

That sounds a lot like the Auto-rotate function. When the camera senses the orientation of the camera is vertical (ie turned through 90 degress as you would to shoot a tall subject) it will rotate the image preview so you can review without physically turning the camera. This appears to 'crop' the image from the sides, as it's constrained to the height of the LCD screen, although the actual file is not cropped at all.

It's a feature that only works some of the time because it's activated (I believe) by a simple rolling switch that may not trigger if the camera isn't level to start with; pointing up or down, for example. I personally switch it off and rotate shots myself, so as to have a bigger preview to look at.

In the Playback Display options (Playback menu number 2) you should be able to set rotation to Manual. That should do the trick.

Cheers

Mick

There's some misunderstanding about frame rates, refresh rates and mains power ratings here. They're completely different things and while they are all measured in Hertz, they have little or no relation to one another as regards playback.

The Hz rating on monitors and TVs refers to the screen refresh rate and has nothing to do with mains power. A high refresh rate will smooth anomalies experienced with upsampled frame rates, but these anomalies are not genrally due to regional variations.

Television broadcast in Europe (and, incidentally, most of South America, Asia, Australasia, Africa and the far East) is PAL, which requires TVs to have a specific framerate and resolution.

This means video-capable recording devices (including cameras) intended for the European market are always configured for PAL playback. The video standard for this is 25p. The US uses NTSC, with a different broadcast resolution and framerate, and differently-configured recording hardware; cameras therefore shoot 24p by default.

There's some debate as to which is 'best' but a lot of judder problems occur with poorly-executed de-interlacing from both 50i and 60i (interlaced), not due to original native (progressive) framerates. There's nothing inherently wrong with either format and normally there's no need to shoot 24p in Europe; certainly nothing worth bricking your NEX (and voiding its warranty) by flashing it with the wrong firmware.

I hope that explains things. Wikipedia is good for this sort of thing if you need to know more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_rate#Digital_video_and_television

Cheers

Mick
