Example image of a woman jogging in a forest trail, with human pose estimation recognising her head and body

Real-time Recognition AF: Human pose estimation technology

AI processing in the new BIONZ XR2 processing engine improves recognition by approximately 30% over the α7 IV. Human pose estimation technology uses detailed form and pose data to achieve reliable human eye recognition as well as body and head position, even with challenging subjects. Multiple subjects can also be recognised, making it possible to track the desired subject.

A sample image of a woman running in the forest, showing that even when the subject is moving fast the camera can chase the subject accurately

Reliable Real-time Tracking

AI-based Real-time Tracking accurately focuses on and tracks the selected subject when the shutter button is half-pressed. If the subject cannot be recognised or subject recognition AF is OFF, Sony’s original algorithm processes colour, pattern, and spatial data at high speed for reliable focus and tracking. If [Touch Tracking] is engaged, simply touch a subject on the monitor to instantly select it for tracking.

Illustration showing 759 AF phase detection points distributed densely across most of the image sensor

High-density 759-point focal plane phase-detection AF

759 AF points in a high-density focal plane phase-detection AF system cover approximately 94% of the image area for precise focusing. The processing engine processes the large amount of data from the image sensor in real time to ensure ideal focus even in challenging situations, such as when shooting small subjects or night scenes where focus often falls on the background.

Example image of a woman drinking at a bar at a dark situation

Precise AF in low light

The latest AF algorithms achieve high AF precision down to light levels as low as EV-4.0 in AF-S mode (ISO 100 equivalent, F2.0 lens) so that AF is precise and reliable even in low light.

A sample image capturing the moment when a dog shakes its head vigorously

Pre-Capture for moments prior to shutter release

Capture that decisive moment, even if it’s in the past. With this feature, half-pressing the shutter button to set focus enables the camera to capture a series of images, starting from up to one second before the shutter button is fully deployed.

A sample still image capturing the exact moment a man kicks a ball up from the sand

Speed boost for critical action shots

Use one-button Continuous Shooting Speed Boost to temporarily change the continuous shooting speed at any time while shooting a continuous burst. For example, you can instantly switch from the standard burst rate to a higher rate when the key moment approaches. This function is best used when you can roughly predict the timing of the desired shot, and it’s now available even while shooting single frames.

An illustration showing how 7K oversampling is used to generate 4K movies

7K oversampled 4K 60p recording with full pixel readout and no pixel binning

The new BIONZ XR2 processor and Exmor RS sensor enable full pixel readout with no pixel binning when recording full-frame. This allows 3.3x the data required for 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160) to be compressed into spectacularly detailed 4K 60p images with minimal moiré and jaggies.

A portrait of a woman shot with Dynamic active Mode

Extreme stabilisation with Dynamic active Mode

The Dynamic active Mode adds electronic stabilisation to the optical stabilisation system for even greater effect. This improves stabilisation approximately 30% more than just Active Mode, making it possible to shoot smooth, stable images even when running around with the camera.

A woman being filmed using the Auto Framing feature

Auto Framing automatically adjusts composition

Auto Framing uses AI-based subject recognition to automatically keep the subject in a prominent position when shooting movies, even when the camera is stationary—ideal for shooting interviews, music performance, cooking and much more. You can also set the timing at which Auto Framing will begin, the size of the subject in the frame and the tracking speed.  [1] LCD monitor  [2] Recorded footage
