How to transfer photos or videos from your Sony camera to your computer or smartphone
Struggling to get your photos off your camera? Whether you're using a professional camera like the Sony Alpha series or a Sony Cybershot point-and-shoot, here’s a step-by-step guide to transfer your pictures to your computer or smartphone. No tech skills required—let’s keep it simple!
What do you need?
Before starting, make sure you have the following:
- Your beloved camera (e.g., Sony Alpha, Cybershot or vlogging camera) + memory card
- USB cable that fits your camera (usually included with the camera)
- Computer or smartphone (Windows, macOS, Android, or iPhone)
- Optional: Memory Card reader (if your computer or phone doesn’t have a memory card slot):
- A memory card reader is a budget-friendly and convenient way to connect your camera’s memory card directly to a device.
- Memory card readers are widely available online or at electronics stores.
- Some computers, especially laptops, have built-in memory card slots, so check your device first!
- For smartphone transfer: Use a companion app. (Creators' App, Imaging Edge Mobile, Imaging Edge Mobile Plus)
If you don't know what these do, please visit: What are the differences between Creators' App, Imaging Edge Mobile Plus, and Imaging Edge Mobile? Which app should I use?
Note: If you’re shooting in RAW format, the images may not display correctly on your device. To avoid this, switch your camera settings to save pictures as JPEG for easier viewing and transfer. RAW files are large and meant for advanced editing; JPEGs are universally compatible.
What are my options?
- Easy: use a memory card reader (computer)
- Medium: Connect your camera to your computer using a USB (Computer - Winodws / Mac OS)
- Advanced: Use a companion app (smartphone)
