Camera Stuck While Updating with an SD Card? Here's How to Fix It

If your Sony camera gets stuck while performing an update with an SD card or CFexpress card, there’s no need to panic. Watch the video above or follow the steps below to resolve the issue.

What to do if the camera gets stuck during a memory card update

During a normal update, the camera’s LCD screen may remain black for around 6 minutes, although the exact time may vary. Only follow the steps below if the screen remains black for more than 30 minutes, as this may indicate that the update is stuck.

    Steps

    1. Move the camera’s power switch to the OFF position.
    2. Remove the battery from the camera.

IMPORTANT: During a normal update, leave the battery in the camera. Remove it only if the camera has been stuck for more than 30 minutes.

    3. Remove the memory card that you used for the update.
    4. Prepare a different, freshly formatted memory card.
    5. On your computer, delete any previous copies of the update file from the Downloads folder.
    6. Download the update again from the Sony Support website.
    7. Copy the new update file to the freshly formatted memory card.
    8. Check that the file is named exactly:

      BODYDATA.DAT

The update will not work if your computer has renamed the file, for example:

      BODYDATA.DAT(1)

Before downloading the update file again, delete any existing copies from your computer.

    9. Insert the newly prepared memory card into memory card slot 1 on the camera.
    10. Reinsert the battery, then switch the camera on.

    What happens next?

The camera screen will remain black, but the LED should begin blinking. A blinking LED indicates that the update has resumed.

The update may take approximately 15 minutes to complete from this point. Do not switch off the camera or remove the battery or memory card while the LED is blinking.
