Can the shutter sound on my camera be turned off?

You can turn off the shutter sound on cameras equipped with the Silent Shooting function or Electronic Shutter by simply adjusting the settings.

There are two types of shutter sounds:

• Mechanical (from the physical shutter movement)
• Electronic (a simulated sound played by the camera)

The Silent Shooting function allows you to turn off both the mechanical and Electronic Shutter sounds at once.
When using the Electronic Shutter, the mechanical shutter sound is automatically turned off, but the Electronic Shutter sound may still play unless disabled separately.

The procedure to turn off the shutter sound varies by camera model.

Note: For models not listed below, especially if it doesn't have an Electronic Shutter, you cannot turn off the shutter sound.

How to turn off the shutter sound for each model

How to turn it off using the Silent Shooting function

You can turn off both the mechanical and Electronic Shutter sounds at the same time by changing the camera settings as follows:

• When using an ILCE-6100, ILCE-6100A, ILCE-6300, ILCE-6400, ILCE-6400A, ILCE-6500, ILCE-6600, ILCE-7M3, ILCE-7RM2, ILCE-7RM3, ILCE-7RM3A, ILCE-7RM4, ILCE-7RM4A, ILCE-7S, ILCE-7SM2, ILCE-7C, or ZV-E10:
  • MENU → (Camera Settings2) or (Custom Settings) → Silent Shooting → On
• When using an ILCE-1, ILCE-1M2, ILCE-9M3, ILCE-6700, ILCE-7SM3, ILCE-7M4, ILCE-7M5, ILCE-7RM5, ILCE-7CM2, ILCE-7CR, ZV-1F, ZV-1M2, ZV-E1, ZV-E10M2, ILME-FX2, ILME-FX3, ILME-FX3A, or ILME-FX30:
  • MENU → (Shooting) → Shutter/Silent → Silent Mode Settings → Silent Mode → On

• When using the Silent Shooting function, be careful not to violate the subject's privacy or image rights. Use this function responsibly and at your own risk.
• When using the Silent Shooting function, there are some restrictions on its use and other features that cannot be used simultaneously.

• When using the ILCE-9M3 or ZV-E10M2, you can turn off the shutter sound by setting the Audio Signal Volume to 0.

How to turn it off using the Shutter Type switching function

You can turn off the mechanical and Electronic Shutter sounds by changing the camera settings as follows:

• When using an ILCE-9, ILCE-9M2, ZV-1, ZV-1A, DSC-RX100M7 or DSC-RX100M7A:
  1. MENU → (Camera Settings2) → Shutter Type → Electronic Shutter
  2. MENU → (Camera Settings2) → Audio signals → Off or On:other than e-shut

• When using an ILCE-7SM3, ILCE-7M4, ILCE-7RM5, ILME-FX2, ILME-FX3, or ILME-FX3A:
  1. MENU → (Shooting) → Shutter/Silent → Shutter Type → Electronic Shutter
• When using an ILCE-1:
  1. MENU → (Shooting) → Shutter/Silent → Shutter Type → Electronic Shutter
  2. MENU → (Setup) → Sound Option → Audio signals → Off or On:w/o shutter
• When using an ILCE-1M2, ILCE-7M5, or ILME-FX2:
  1. MENU → (Shooting) → Shutter/Silent → Shutter Type → Electronic Shutter
  2. MENU → (Setup) → Sound Option → Audio Signal(Shooting) → Off or On:w/o shutter
• When using a DSC-RX1RM3:
  1. MENU → (Shooting) → Shutter → Shutter Type → Electronic Shutter
  2. MENU → (Setup) → Sound Option → Audio Signal(Shooting) → Off
