How to use built-in WWAN

WWAN (Wireless Wide Area Network) technology, also called mobile broadband, provides Internet access through a mobile phone network. You get the benefits of regular broadband, such as ADSL or Cable, plus the benefit of wireless mobility.

What you need in order to use WWAN

WWAN modem

If your VAIO has a built-in WWAN modem, you do not need other hardware to set up a mobile broadband connection. If you are unsure whether your VAIO has a built-in WWAN module, please check the online specifications for your model.
(Note: If your VAIO does not have built-in WWAN modem, you can buy an external WWAN adapter for e.g. USB 3G modem stick. Contact your mobile operator for information and support.)

SIM card

For WWAN to work, you need a SIM card that is activated for data. If you do not have a valid SIM card, please contact your mobile operator for information and purchase.

WWAN connection manager

The WWAN connection manager preinstalled on your VAIO may be different depending on your VAIO model and its country of purchase. Which connection manager to use depends on the type of SIM card that you have:

If your VAIO comes preinstalled with WebToGo® OneClick Internet, you can use this generic connection manager with any SIM card from any mobile operator. Alternatively, you can use the Windows 7 Network Connections to set up your WWAN connection.
If your notebook comes preinstalled with an operator-specific connection manager (for e.g., Orange® Internet EveryWhere, Vodafone® Mobile Connect, etc.), you can use this connection manager only with a SIM card from the same operator. If you wish to use a SIM card from a different operator, please use Windows 7 Network Connections to set up your WWAN connection.

Note:

If you have downgraded your notebook to Windows XP, please use OneClick Internet. This connection manager is included within the XP downgrade package available in the Windows XP download section for your VAIO model.
We do not advise using any connection manager that was not supplied by VAIO, as we cannot guarantee that this will work with your built-in WWAN modem.

How to insert SIM card

The SIM card slot of your notebook is located in the battery bay. Please proceed as follows to insert a SIM card. Consult the user guide supplied with your VAIO model for more details.

Turn off your notebook
Remove the battery pack
Insert the SIM card with its printed circuit side down in the notebook's SIM card slot
Reinstall the battery pack and make sure it is properly connected and locked.
(Note: WWAN will not work if battery is not properly installed.)

How to enable WWAN in Windows 7

Ensure the WIRELESS switch is set to ON. (If you cannot locate the WIRELESS switch on your notebook, please check the user guide supplied with your VAIO model.)
Ensure that the battery is properly installed in your notebook. WWAN will not work if the battery is not (correctly) installed.
Click the VAIO Smart Network icon () in the notification area of the Windows taskbar. (Alternatively, click Start > All Programs > VAIO Control Center > Network Connections > VAIO Smart Network > Advanced)
Ensure that the Wireless WAN option is turned on. (For help about VAIO Smart Network, click the ‘?’ button within this program)

How to enable WWAN in Windows 8

1. If your unit is equipped with a WIRELESS switch, make sure is set to ON.
2. Ensure that the battery is properly installed in your notebook.
Depending on the model, WWAN may not work if the battery is not (correctly) installed.
3. Access Wireless under PC Settings.
