No sound when connecting a Blu-ray Disc Player to a TV via HDMI

IMPORTANT: This article applies only to specific products and/or operating systems. Check Applicable Products and Categories for details.

If there is no sound when connecting your Blu-ray Disc player to your TV using an HDMI connection, follow these troubleshooting steps.

    Possible Causes

    1. The connection uses an HDMI-to-DVI adapter or HDMI-to-DVI cable (DVI does not support audio).
    2. The TV is not set to the correct HDMI input.
    3. You are trying to play an MPEG2 Program Stream (PS) file.
    4. The HDMI cable may be faulty.
    5. Audio settings on the Blu-ray player or TV may need adjustment.

    Troubleshooting Steps

    1. Check TV Input and Connections

    • Ensure the TV is set to the correct HDMI input where the Blu-ray player is connected.

The input button on your remote control allows you to switch between different devices connected to your TV, such as a cable box, streaming device, Blu-ray player, or gaming console. It typically appears as a button labeled "Input" or "Source," or may have an icon resembling a rectangle with an arrow pointing into it. When you press it, a list appears on your TV screen, showing all available inputs so you can select the device you want to use.

    • If a video cable is also connected, the TV may be set to the wrong input.
    • If using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter or cable, an additional audio cable is required (digital optical, coaxial, or red & white analog).

    2. Restart the Blu-ray Player

    • Turn the Blu-ray player off and on again.
    • This often resolves issues with MPEG2 PS file playback.

    3. Replace the HDMI Cable

    • Try using a different HDMI cable to rule out cable issues.

    4. Adjust Audio Settings on the Blu-ray Player

If using an AV receiver or home theater system, adjust the following settings on the Blu-ray player:

    • Audio (HDMI) / Digital Audio Output: Set to PCM.
    • BD Audio Mix Setting:
      • On: Outputs a mixed audio signal.
      • Off: Outputs high-definition audio (recommended for AV receivers).
    • Audio DRC (Dynamic Range Compression):
      • Auto: Uses disc settings (for BD-ROM only).
      • On: Applies standard compression.
      • Off: Produces a more dynamic sound.
    • Downmix:
      • Surround: For audio devices that support Dolby Surround (Pro Logic) or DTS Neo:6.
      • Stereo: For devices that do not support surround sound.

    5. Check Surround Sound Settings

    • If using a home theater system, check if there is sound from the rear speakers.
    • If the volume is too low, turn Audio DRC or BD Audio Mix to Off.

    6. Test with a Different TV

    • If the issue persists, try connecting the Blu-ray player to another TV.
    • If sound works on another TV, the issue may be with your original TV’s settings.
