This article discusses the Timeshift function, available on specific BRAVIA TVs.
What is the Timeshift function?
Timeshift allows you to pause a broadcast and resume watching at your convenience.
This feature is especially useful when you need to attend to interruptions without missing any parts of your favourite shows.
- TV app: you can only use Timeshift when watching a broadcast on the TV app.
- Playback duration: you can play back a broadcast for up to 8 hours.
- Playback controls: you can use fast forward or other playback controls while using Timeshift.
How to use the Timeshift function
To use Timeshift, you must first register a recording hard disk (HDD) to your TV. Follow the steps below to set up Timeshift on your BRAVIA TV.

- Connect a USB HDD device to the USB port (blue) labelled “HDD REC” on your TV.
- Turn the USB HDD device on if required.
- Wait until the screen [USB drive connected] is displayed.
If the message does not appear, you can manually register the USB HDD device from the Settings menu. - Select [Register for recording].
- Follow the on-screen instructions to register the USB HDD device.
Alternatively, Press the (Quick Settings) button on the remote control, and select the following:
[Settings] — [Channels & Inputs] — [Recording device setup] — [HDD registration].
Step 2: Start using Timeshift
- Once you have an HDD registered, you can press the [Pause] or [Play/Pause] button while watching a broadcast on the TV app.
- Alternatively, you can also start this function by selecting [Timeshift Start] from [Menu].
- To return to the live broadcast, press the [Back] or [Stop] button.
When you exit the Timeshift screen, for example, by launching the Home screen or switching apps or entering the settings, the Timeshift function will stop.
Important information about Timeshift and recording
- Temporary storage: Content recorded using Timeshift is temporary and will be deleted when Timeshift is stopped. To permanently save content, use the recording function.
- Recording Limitations: You can't set up a new recording while using the Timeshift function. However, any scheduled recordings will start.
When that happens, the Timeshift recording will stop, but you can still watch the portion recorded before the scheduled recording began. - Disk Space: If the remaining hard disk drive capacity becomes low, Timeshift recording will automatically stop.
You can still watch the section of Timeshift content before the hard disk space became too low. - When the TV country is set to Italy, the recording function is disabled, and the Timeshift function is also unavailable.
