Images from the projector are out of focus (VPL-XW Series)

Make sure the screen is not tilted or curved.
Note: The screen may become curved while rolled up for storage.

• An example image when viewing the screen from the front or side.
  
• An example image when the screen is not flat or leveled.
  

Adjust the installation angle of the projector and be mindful of the following points:

• If the screen is not flat or the front of the projector is not parallel to the screen, one side of the image will be large and blurred.
• Avoid using the projector if it is tilted. Do not install it anywhere other than on a level surface or on the ceiling. Other locations may result in uneven color uniformity.
• If the projector is tilted up or down, the image on the screen may be trapezoidal.

Example images for unsuitable conditions

• A: 15° or more
• B: 10° or more

Adjust the position of the projected image using lens shift, and the size of the projected image using lens zoom.
Note: For details on how to adjust the position or size of the projected image refer to the Adjusting the Position of the Projected Image section on the Help Guide.

Before adjusting, select either of the following:

• Adjusting the focus while projecting the lens focus adjustment window (test pattern)
  You can display the lens focus adjustment window (test pattern) by either of the following methods.
  • On the projector, press the LENS button.
  • On the supplied remote control, press the FOCUS button for VPL-XW7000, or press the PATTERN button for VPL-XW5000.

  If you can see the center and four corners of the screen, the focus is adjustable. If you cannot see all of them, try
  • 1. Adjust the installation angle of the projector
  • 2. Adjusting the image position with the projector again.

How to adjust the focus

Notes:

• The method to adjust the focus differs per model. For details on how to adjust the focus, refer to the Adjusting the Position of the Projected Image section in the Help Guide.
• Below are the steps when projecting the blue test pattern.

1. Adjust the focus roughly to grasp the range in focus while looking at the characters in the center of the screen.
   • An enlarged image of the center of the screen (Big blur)
     
   • An enlarged image of the center of the screen (Good focus)
     
2. Fine-tune the focus.
   Note: If the center and four corners of the screen are not in focus at the same time, check the four corners of the screen. If there are corners where the sharpness is not good, adjust the focus slightly to balance with the four corners.

   • An enlarged image of the corner of the screen (Good focus)
     
   When the four corners are in focus, finish the adjustment.

The following environment is not suitable because the temperature of the projector and lens is not stable. Make sure there are no problems with the installation environment.

1. Near walls: To maintain performance and reliability, leave space between the walls and the unit as illustrated.
   • An image when viewing the unit from the top
     
     • A: 30 cm (11 7/8 inches)
     • B: 5 cm (2 inches)
   • An image when viewing the unit from the front
     
     • A: 30 cm (11 7/8 inches)
     • B: 15 cm (6 inches)
   Note: The wall on the ventilation holes side may become hot. Air from air conditioners or the ventilation holes of this projector or other devices may cause oscillation on the screen. Be sure not to install the projector in the area where the air from air conditioners or the ventilation holes reaches its front side.
2. Poorly ventilated location: Leave space of more than 30 cm (11 7/8 inches) around the projector.
   
3. Hot and humid: Do not install the projector near stoves or fan heaters.
   
4. Locations subject to direct cool or warm air from an air-conditioner: Installing the projector in such a location may cause a malfunction due to moisture condensation or a rise in temperature.
   

Before adjusting

Before trying the adjusting the focus, a stable room temperature is recommended.

Please refrain from changing the setting of the air conditioner or opening and closing windows to avoid temperature changes while projecting.

Adjusting the focus

Adjust the focus according to the following steps:
Note: The method to adjust the focus differs per model. For details on how to adjust the focus, refer to the Adjusting the Position of the Projected Image section in the Help Guide.

1. Project your favorite image for more than 30 minutes to stabilize the temperature inside the unit and lens.
   
   Note: If you have changed the projection image after projecting the first image, adjust the focus in the next step within 15 minutes.
2. Fine-tune the focus.
   Note: If the center and four corners of the screen are not in focus at the same time, check the four corners of the screen. If there are corners where the sharpness is not good, adjust the focus slightly to balance with the four corners.

   When the four corners are in focus, the adjustment is finished.
