Packed for Action with the FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G

Teja Lisjak

My name is Teja and I’m a London based photographer and filmmaker, creating engaging and dynamic videos for brands and social media. Over the past 5 years, Sony cameras and lenses have enabled me to turn my passion into a career, and after testing their brand new FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G lens, I want to share my favourite features and how any up-and-coming filmmaker can use it to their advantage.

What was your first impression of the lens?

I was really excited to hear that Sony was releasing this lens, and I truly wanted to put it to the test and see what it was all about. I’ve been wanting to shoot an action piece around skiing and snowboarding for a while and thought this would be a perfect opportunity. As a filmmaker, I’m always on the lookout for gear I can use in lots of different scenarios, and this lens offers great versatility of the focal range, has light and compact design, and with the aperture of f/2.8 it has incredible bokeh.

How did you find the lens sharpness / picture quality?

Being a big user of both the FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II and the FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II lenses, I can say that this lens falls into the same category when it comes to sharpness and the overall quality. Paired with the ZV-E1, it was the perfect combination to get the best quality image, whether shooting into the sky of a snowboarder doing the jumps or following downhill riders in the forest.

What was your favourite scene to shoot and why?

For anyone that has seen my work before knows that I’m big on mounting the camera in different places to get unique POV shots. This time we really went by the saying ‘risk it for the biscuit’ and mounted the camera on the snowboard. I also loved the garage scene - a few of my friends took over the lighting and helped us achieve a proper cinematic look. In the end, we stayed there for another hour just shooting photos for fun, because we liked the scene so much!

How did you find pairing the FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G with the ZV-E1?

Pairing the FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G with the ZV-E1 has been a revelation, and incredibly beneficial to my workflow. With dependable autofocus and a lightweight build, I can travel light anywhere, without sacrificing quality. Since this video had lots of moving subjects, the speed of autofocus was really useful. There were a few scenes when I was filming the bikers during their break through the fire pit using the eye AF. As soon as I framed my shot, the nearest eye was instantly in focus. Just to add, for this project I used one of Sony’s best and most compact microphones, the ECM-M1 and I'd honestly recommend this setup to anyone looking to create content on the go. The quality that you get from this very small setup is incredible and was perfect for my needs.

What lesson did you take away from this project, and what advice would you give to anyone looking to step up their filmmaking?

This project reminded me of the power of creativity and attention to detail. The experience of using just one lens brought home the importance of getting creative and thinking outside the box, and with a more limited focal range I had to adapt to different scenes.

Final thoughts

Another great job by Sony in making a lens that is not only incredible, but truly useful in a wide range of scenarios. From minimal focus breathing to exceptional tracking capabilities, this lens exceeded my expectations in every aspect. I love that with every release, Sony makes it easier for us to create and hopefully more people feel inspired to either begin or continue stepping up their creation journey. Whether that’s filming your day-to-day life, travel trips or even creating films and documentaries! I’m excited to continue using it and create more content on the go, which will ultimately push me to expand my filmmaking skills even further!
