Andrea Font

Taking a rare break between projects, it seems like a perfect chance to ask Andrea Font how she’d best describe herself as a creator. Shooting a hybrid of stills and video for brands and personal projects across a varied mix of subjects, from music and events, to watersports, she quickly answers: “I’m an all-terrain camerawoman!”

Whatever she’s working on, it’s new experiences that drive her. “I’m a person who’s stimulated by many things,” Andrea says; “sports, adventure, cinema, music, travel, vibrant campaigns… and to have the possibility of making a living from all of this with my videos and my photos seems to me to be the best definition of what, for me, is personal success.”

“On a creative level, I like projects that give me the freedom to be artistic and inventive,” she explains, “and in most cases that means shooting a combination of stills and video. In the beginning I worked as a photographer only, but by the time I was 20 I’d realised that video would open up huge possibilities. Today I am 80% video and 20% photo. My heart will always remain divided, but in a good way!”

This dual approach, and the environments that Andrea works in, requires a combination of adaptability and quality that’s not available in most equipment. Today, she works with the Sony Alpha 7S III and a variety of Sony lenses, which she says “is what I’ve always dreamed of. It gives me a powerful mix of photo and video, and one that I’ve really fallen in love with.”

“The combination of features is especially useful for my action and travel projects, where there’s always an emphasis on working light,” Andrea explains, “and so having a body of the Alpha 7S III’s size, which gives me so much quality in video and stills, is revolutionary. It also means that when I’m working around or under water with one single housing I can do the whole project with the same setup, instead of mounting two housings with two different bodies.”

So what features of the Alpha 7S III really make the difference? “Without a doubt, my favourite feature is having 4K video at 120fps,” Andrea explains. “A lot of the footage I shoot is used on mobile devices, so it needs a vertical format. Previously, if I wanted silky smooth slow motion I could only do that in HD, so that meant I’d have to shoot upright to get full resolution. That left me with no way to use the same piece in a horizontal format for desktop or TV. Now I can capture everything in one shot and then create multiple outputs with no loss in quality.”

The Alpha 7S III’s Dual ISO has also been revolutionary for Andrea, “especially for my music and festival projects, where I’m often shooting at sunset or after dark. The Dual ISO helps me a lot in those low-light situations, but also at times where the light changes a lot, for instance changes in stage lighting during a performance.”

One of the main reasons I switched from DSLRs to Sony mirrorless years ago was the superb sensitivity of their sensors,” she continues, “but the advantages that dual ISO offers takes it to the next level. So, the Alpha 7S III’s base ISO is 640, which is the sweet spot of dynamic range versus noise. Theoretically, as from any sensor’s base ISO, if you turn it down, the less dynamic range you’ll get, and if you turn it up the more noise you get. But the camera has two base ISOs, the higher of which is 12,800. There you still get loads of dynamic range, but the same noise as 640. In the dark, you can shoot with almost no noise. It’s like magic!”

A successful creator, Andrea is now giving something back to upcoming filmmakers. “At 20, I set up my own production company,” she reveals, “and at 21 I left university. Now, at 25, I’m teaching a master’s degree at the same university. There are so many things that I’ve learned in work that I don’t think get taught: how do you make a living from creativity? How do you develop a combination of emotional and business intelligence?”

“Most of all,” she finishes, “I’ve discovered that it’s good to have a path that goes off the beaten track. Classical studies are not always the key to success, especially in creative professions. The best tutor is constant work. That’s where you’ll find your style, your best results, and make your mark on the world. Then you just need the right camera to help you do it!”
