The overall winners of the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards 2024 have been announced and it’s been another year packed with amazing images.

 

Photographer of the Year / Documentary Projects winner

Juliette Pavy / France

Juliette Pavy’s series, Spiralkampagnen: Forced Contraception and Unintended Sterilisation of Greenlandic Women, delves into the severe and lasting impacts of the involuntary birth control campaign led by Danish authorities in Greenland in the 1960s and 1970s. Through a mix of poignant imagery, from historical archival photographs to contemporary portraits, Pavy exposes the trauma experienced by the victims and the ongoing investigation into this dark chapter of history.

Chair of the 2024 Professional Competition Jury, Monica Allende, commented,

Juliette Pavy's empathetic portrayal of her subjects captures them in a manner that is both dignified and profoundly intimate, highlighting her exceptional talent. Pavy's dedication to exposing the stark realities faced by marginalised communities, coupled with her compelling narrative approach, underscores the importance of supporting her career trajectory."

 

Open Photographer of the Year / Landscape winner

Liam Man's winning photograph, Moonrise Sprites over Storr, transports viewers to the rugged landscape of the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Lit by the rising moon and drone lights amidst a powerful blizzard, the image captures the ethereal beauty of nature and the sublime moments that often go unnoticed.

Reflecting on his win, Man says, "Being selected as Open Photographer of the Year in the Sony World Photography Awards is a dream turned reality, leaving me feeling deeply grateful, overjoyed, and absolutely speechless!"

 

Youth Photographer of the Year

Daniel Murray's photograph, Solitary Surfer, captures the serene beauty of a Cornish beach at the end of summer. Through soft tones and expansive landscapes, Murray invites viewers to immerse themselves in the quiet atmosphere of coastal life and the fleeting moments of solitude.

Murray shared, "This is a great achievement as a young photographer. Thanks to the Sony World Photography Awards for this opportunity!"

 

Sustainability Prize

Kathleen Orlinsky’s series, America’s First Wilderness, explores the delicate balance between humanity and nature in the Gila Wilderness of New Mexico. Through captivating imagery, Orlinsky highlights the efforts to preserve the region's untouched beauty and promote environmental conservation.

Orlinsky expressed, "I am thrilled and honoured to be awarded, especially excited to raise awareness about pressing environmental and conservation issues."
